 ​Maryam Nawaz Sharif is a prominent Pakistani politician and the first woman to serve as Chief Minister of Punjab, Pakistan's most populous province, since February 2024. As the daughter of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, she has emerged as a significant figure in the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N), often regarded as her father's political heir. ​

Born on October 28, 1973, in Lahore, Maryam Nawaz is the youngest of three children of Nawaz Sharif and Kulsoom Nawaz. She received her early education at the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Lahore and later earned a Master's degree in English Literature from the University of Punjab. Initially, she pursued medical studies but did not complete the program. ​5

Maryam Nawaz's political journey began in earnest in 2012 when she was appointed to lead the PML-N's election campaign ahead of the 2013 general elections. Following the party's victory, she was appointed Chairperson of the Prime Minister's Youth Programme in November 2013. 

Her political prominence grew after her father's disqualification from office in 2017. She became a vocal critic of the judiciary and military, leading nationwide campaigns to rally support for the PML-N. In 2023, she was appointed Senior Vice President and Chief Organizer of the PML-N, tasked with restructuring and revitalizing the party. ​

Maryam Nawaz faced legal hurdles, notably in 2018 when she was convicted in the Avenfield corruption case, receiving a seven-year prison sentence. However, in September 2022, the Islamabad High Court overturned her conviction, reinstating her eligibility to hold public office. ​

In February 2024, Maryam Nawaz made history by becoming the first woman elected as Chief Minister of Punjab. She secured 220 votes in the 371-seat provincial assembly.
